He and his family were returning from a Thanksgiving holiday in Washington when they took a wrong turn and ended up in the Oregon wilderness, becoming snowbound with no fuel and no cellphone coverage.
Through text messages that went through despite the lack of cellphone reception, rescuers were able to find his family, but Mr. Kim himself –– who went on ahead to find rescue –– succumbed to hypothermia.
His wife and two daughters survived the ordeal without any lasting injury.
