Before pursuing his MFA, Abubakr graduated from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Drama. His work can be seen on Power Book II (Starz), Katy Keene (CW), Tommy (CBS), Starling (AppleTV+), Dig (USA Network), Doradus, and Irish Goodbye (Cannes 2019/OutFest, Directed by Ade M'Cormack), for which he won Best Actor at the Top Indie Film Awards and Indie Shorts Fest.

He also worked commercially with Nike, Redbull, Diadora, and more. He has worked with Yale Repertory Theatre, American Repertory Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, The Sundance Institute, Primary Stages, A Noise Within, East West Players, Space on Ryder Farm, and more.
