He began studying geology at Caius College, Cambridge in 1840. In 1849, he joined England's Turco-Persian Boundary Commission, working as a Geologist and naturalist.
He worked briefly for the Geological Survey of India during the 1850s.
In 1845 he married Charlotte Thulbourne. At 38 years old he died at sea.
