He established the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra while serving in the U.S. Army from 1950 until 1952.

He was born to Hugo Chaim Adler, a cantor and Composer. His Jewish family was forced to escape Germany in 1939 and immigrated to the United States. He married Dr. Emily Freeman-Brown.

He and Yo-Yo Ma, along with being contemporaries, were both inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame, Ma in 2007 and Adler in 2008.
