Saher Nasser Abady is an Egyptian Director and Screenwriter. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He graduated from the British University in Egypt with a Film and Media Studies BA at age 21. His directorial debut was Espana (2019) as his first Live-Action Short Film at 21 years old.
It was his film school graduation project.The first film that made him fall in love with cinema was the first Harry Potter film in which he saw at age 7. It was extremely different than any of the Egyptian movies he grew up watching.
It was an eye opener to what cinema can create and how it can swallow people into a beautiful world that doesn't even exist. But he never thought of making films, he never even knew what is a film director.
Through his childhood he wanted to become many things, a pilot, an astronaut, an actor, a video game developer, an engineer, a singer and many different things that have nothing in common. He thought that life is full of possibilities and he wanted to experience all of that.
At some point later he realized that he can be all of that through cinema. He can exist in all these worlds in films, and experience a little bit of every everything.He moved to Doha, Qatar with his family in 2009 at age 11.
To accompany his parents for work. His first introduction to filmmaking as an industry was at a Doha Film Institute workshop in 2013 at age 15 years old. The workshop was made for teenagers across the country, to introduce them to the very basics of the process of filmmaking.
His father saw the workshop's advertisement in the news paper and advised him to go. That was his first introduction to how films were made and the process of creating films. And what is the mystery of the film director.
At the beginning of the workshop he loved the idea and the feeling of being able to create a world and tell a story through it, and the idea started to settle that he wants to direct films in the future.
But at the end of the workshop they had to make small zero-budget films as an experiment and he chose to be the director of one of those films. When the films were done, he was comparing the Hollywood films he was watching and the masterpieces made by much older and experienced directors that he loves, to what he made at the workshop.
He was extremely disappointed and thought that he was incapable of directing, and that this isn't the path for him. The director teaching the workshop also showed disappointment in him for doing a film below what he expected.
Neither of them realized that Saher was only 15 years old at the time.By the end of high school, around 17 years old. He have seen so many more films and fell in love more and more with the magic of cinema.
It was hard to only watch, without being part of it. It became a dream that he can't just let go. He felt that he had so many stories that he shouldn't just tell, but he must tell to the world through cinema.
He realized that he was only 15 at the time of the workshop, and that this shouldn't define whether he can or can't direct for the rest of his life. After high school he went back to Egypt to study Film, and that dream grew bigger and bigger getting clearer and more possible.
He graduated at at 21 years old with a promise to himself, that he will both, always keep learning, and always make films. Because there are so many stories that deserve to be told the way he sees it and feels it.
Whether its personal, or whether he feels inclined to tell it to the world through the art of films.
