Before Fame

He received his Ph.D. in political science in 1952 from New York's New School for Social Research. He subsequently became a Professor of Political Science at the City University of New York.

His political/historical work, The Politics of Genocide: The Holocaust in Hungary, earned him the Jewish National Book Award in 1981.

Family Life

He was born in Romania and raised in Transylvania. Before immigrating to America in 1948, he was a prisoner in a Soviet Prisoner-of-War camp.
