Ramy ElGabry was born on December 1, 1986, in Damietta, Egypt, to Hassan ElGabry and Nevien AbdulQader. His father is a businessman who works in textiles, real estate, automobiles, and leather craftsmanship.

Having been raised in a trade and industrial district, ElGabry was exposed to different sorts of stories and people enriching his visual experiences. His mother played an influential role by being a good storyteller by nature who is keen on creating bedtime stories for her kids.

A few years later, his father bought a video camera and daily the family spent regular movie nights watching VHS videotapes every night.ElGabry earned a B.S. degree in cinema in 2008 at International Academy for Engineering and Media Science (IAEM) university.

He was closely schooled and mentored by the renowned Egyptian Directors and Screenwriters Tewfik Saleh and Ali Badr Khan.After his graduation, he made his first short film Zooba which became viral during the Egyptian revolution in 2011.

His views on culture and politics fueled his following films including Eid, Eskandar and the political comedy short film Survival of The Fittest.In 2011, ElGabry gained global recognition for This Time (2011) which was one of the 10 finalists selected out 15,000 entries in Your Film Festival and screened in Venice.

The finalist filmmakers received global votes as the top 10 greatest storytellers. This Time won regional critical and popular acclaim.After this, he made Simple Story About Love then From Inside which earned 9 global and regional awards and was officially selected by +26 International festivals including Oregon Cinema Arts Film Festival, Africa International Film, Festival International Entr'2 Marches in Cannes and the 48th Rosh International Film Festival.

In 2017, ElGabry explored the Claymation technique with Monster of The Web which gained 7 official selections of international film festivals. In 2018, his controversial short documentary Communities Like You 2017 gained +1 million views on digital platforms.

In the same year, he directed a new suspense short film that questions one's integrity called Guilt Cycle.ElGabry also served as assistant director trainee of Messages from the Sea (2010) 2010 by Daoud Abdel Sayed which was submitted for the 83rd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and the Egyptian film One Zero.
