Mario Brescia Cafferata

Mario Brescia Cafferata was born on September 25, 1929 in Peru. Mario Brescia Cafferata, one of Peru's wealthiest men, died on May 16, 2013 at at 83. With his brother Pedro, Mario led of a group of companies known as Grupo Breca (it is also called Grupo Brescia), which included a stake in BBVA Continental, one of Peru's largest banks. The firm was founded by Fortunato Brescia Tassano, first as a real estate company that capitalized on Lima's growth. When Fortunato died in 1951, his sons Pedro and Mario took control. Since then, the company has expanded into a multitude of other businesses including agriculture, fish products, cement, paint products and mining. In 1969, the Peruvian government took control of the firm's agriculture companies and in 1973, it expropriated its fishery business. But later Grupo Breca regained a foothold in the fish products business with Tecnologica de Alimentos SA (TASA), now one of the largest producers of fish meal and fish oil in the world. Pedro gave his shares in the companies to his nephews and his sister, Ana María. Mario's sons own 40% of Grupo Breca. The firm also owns mining subsidiary Minsur, which has tin mines in Peru and Brazil. In 2012 Minsur bought 70% of Mina Justa, a copper project in Peru, for $505 million. In January 2012 Minsur started operating a gold mine, Pucamarca, along the border between Peru and Chile. That project has met opposition by groups that say the mine will contaminate the local water supply. Grupo Breca is still in real estate. It owns Intursa, Peru's largest hotel chain, which includes the Westin Lima Hotel, the tallest building in Lima.
