Educated at Magadh University and New York Film Academy Kalpna began her career as a writer and a lecturer of Political Science and International relations in India.

She also worked as an actress and a model before turning to film directing and producing. She found success as a writer at very young age and own many awards in India, including the prestigious Rajbhasha Award given by the government of Bihar, India, for her poetry collection "Chand Ka Paivand.

" Kalpna moved to the United States in 1994 and lived in Illinois for seven years before moving to California. Kalpna's short film Girl With An Accent screened at many film festivals and won Silver Ten Award at the SMTV Mumbai film festival in 2006.
