James L. Coyle grew up in Los Angeles. He attended John Marshall High School in Los Feliz, and showed little interest in school, with the exception of swim team and drawing class. In college this changed, and he graduated from UCLA with a Degree in Art.

His first career was, ironically, as an elementary school teacher in the inner city in LA. The same year he attained his tenure in the profession, he appeared as a panel speaker on the cable TV show "Connections".

The topic was the effect of standardized testing on classroom instruction. He shared his experiences working to raise test scores while still keeping instruction interesting, and while on the show he thoroughly enjoyed working on camera.

So much so, that he resigned at the end of the school year, and subsequently took up acting. He studied acting at the Stella Adler Academy in Hollywood, and since then has worked steadily in projects in and around LA.

One thing that he is particularly proud of is producing his own short "Fishing" in 2009. It explores father/son angst. Another highlight includes appearing on "General Hospital" in 2017. His other interests include hiking, biking, swimming, scuba diving, and surfing.
