Before Fame

He was a Cellist for the People's Symphony Orchestra. He was hired as a musician by Fox Studios after he moved to Hollywood in 1929. His earliest pictures included "Sunny Side Up" from 1929 and "Grand Canary" from 1934.

He won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1947 for 1946's "The Best Years Of Our Lives," directed by william Wyler.
