After attending the University of California, Santa Barbara, and briefly pursuing a television acting career, he relocated to New York, where he made his East Coast theatrical debut opposite Linda Ronstadt in a 1984 New York Shakespeare festival staging of La Boheme.

In the mid 1990s, he played the lead role in the acclaimed London West End production of Mack & Mabel. Apart from his theater roles, he contributed voice acting work to several animated films.
