Before Fame

Her father died in a Russian labor camp in the early 1940s. She and her mother and brother were forced onto trains headed to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp.

The SS transferred her from Auschwitz to the forced labor department of the Neuengamme concentration camp, where she worked until the camp was liberated in 1945.

She had two children with her childhood friend and husband, Ernest Gross. The couple immigrated to the United States in the years following World War II.
