Playing drums since he was eleven, he studied percussion with Tonight Show drummer Ed Shaughnessy in New York City. Don later moved to Los Angeles in 1973. In 1976 he became one of Doc Severinsen's assistants and eventually became the assistant music conductor until Johnny Carson retired in 1992.

When Jay Leno took over the Tonight Show, Don was asked to stay with the show as the music supervisor until 1995.Since then he went on to play on many television shows and specials such as; The Bob Hope Show, Chico and the Man, All My Children and most recently, many documentaries on the History Channel.

He also scored a short film for Warner Brothers Studios and wrote several jingles for commercials in Southern California. In addition he produced some commercials for Volvo and Lexus and worked on Fionna Apple's recording "When the Pawn Hits.
