Olsen completed an M.F.A. in Media Production and Studies from the University of Regina in 2007 and operates Northbound Studios, an independent film production and distribution company he founded in 1999.

He continues to write and do research on a number of film and media related topics including, genre, authorship, and representation.Olsen married Aubrey Lynn Davies in 1999 and has 4 children.
