Before Fame

Before embarking upon his first, six-year-long adventure trip in 1971, he left school in his early teens and subsequently worked on a chicken farm.

Trivia

The largely unplanned, risky expeditions that are depicted in his popular films resulted, in some cases, in serious injury to his travel companions. While filming World Safari II, for Example, Mangels' friend and fellow adventurer Piers Soutier suffered an accident that left him paralyzed and ultimately resulted in his death.

Born in the Netherlands to Johannes and Adrianna Mangels, he relocated with his family to Australia when he was six years old.
